For the first time since October 2013, Cain Velasquez will step inside the Octagon, facing a dangerous finisher in Fabricio Werdum, as he looks to defend his heavyweight title for the third time.
A historic fight between Velasquez, the champion, and Werdum, the interim champion, was originally set for UFC 180, which marked the UFC‘s debut in Mexico. However, there was no such homecoming for Velasquez, who suffered an injury in the lead-up to the fight and was replaced by Mark Hunt.
In a fight for the interim title, Werdum was victorious with a second round KO, landing a flush knee on the ‘Super Samoan’ after Hunt looked fantastic in the opening stanza. The win was Werdum’s fifth straight since re-signing with the UFC.
